Analysis launched for Route 1 in Fairfax County

The Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation has started a multimodal transportation study of Route 1 in Northern Virginia.

The study will include a variety of transit, roadway, pedestrian and bicycling options along the portion of the highway between the Capital Beltway and its intersection with Route 123 in Woodbridge.

Route 1 is a complex traffic hotspot. It serves as an access point to local communities and as an alternative to Interstate 95 for commuters and non-local traffic. The highway has a variety of strip malls, residential, military and tourist facilities along it. The amount of public right-of-way for road development varies along the corridor, and it hosts a mix of land uses that create a unique transportation issue.

“This analysis will enable DRPT to take a comprehensive look at the traffic situation and determine what steps would best help to alleviate congestion and improve the daily lives of those who live and work in the area,” Gov. Bob McDonnell said in a statement.

The study will consider a wide variety of multimodal transportation solutions, including bus rapid transit, light rail, extension of Metrorail service, roadway widening and restructured pedestrian and bicycle facilities.

The analysis will include take into account input from state and local officials, residents and business owners, Fairfax and Prince William counties’ staff, and Virginia’s transportation agencies.
