CarMax names new chief information officer

Richmond-based CarMax Inc. announced Thursday it is promoting Shamim Mohammad to senior vice president and chief information officer. Mohammad will be responsible for the strategic use of technology throughout the company.

He has been vice president of application development and IT planning since joining CarMax in 2012. Richard Smith, who has been CarMax’s chief information officer since 2006 and was the company’s first associate, will retire on Oct. 10 after more than 20 years with the company.

Smith worked on the original CarMax concept in 1991 and participated in the overall design of CarMax’s customer experience.
